The Question I get asked often

Amar Pandit , CFA , CFP

This is a short post but a very powerful one.

When someone meets me for the first time and figures out what I do, the first question normally is “Where is the market heading or what is the market doing?

The correct answer to this question is “I don’t know.

However, to many this might sound lazy and naïve. Generally, people are shocked when I give that answer. There is an awkward silence, and I am seasoned enough to maintain silence for some uncomfortable seconds. No one has ever asked me “What do you mean you don’t know?

After I say, “I don’t know” and the awkward silence for some time, I explain what I mean by “I don’t know.” I say, “I don’t know what the market will do tomorrow or day after or even in a month, but I know what it will do ultimately.

Aren’t we all investing for what will happen ultimately?

Should we be concerned about what happens in the market tomorrow versus what’s going to happen when I need the money?

Thus, we don’t waste our time thinking about what the market will do next and then create noise labelled as research.

The focus of our time and work is always on ensuring that you will have enough whenever you need it. This is what we obsess about so that you can live a life you have imagined with your money. We care deeply about these 4 things for you.

a. Your ability to continue to have an income you never outlive (irrespective of what happens in the market)
b. You can live your life without financial worry
c. You can focus and give time to things that are important to you and
d. Leave a legacy for your loved ones and this world

In short, we focus on helping you live HappyRich.

Thus, what happens in the market tomorrow or the week after is truly of no consequence to either us or to you.

I repeat one of my favourite quotes. “All Successful investing is goal focused and planning driven. All failed investing is market focused and event driven – Nick Murray.”

P.S. Ultimately the next 100% or 300% of the market move will be in one direction – UP. One of my previous Nano “The Next 300% move” explains this concept. You might want to check it out.
